Kick-off of FIDAL Project (Field Trials beyond 5G)

FIDAL – Field Trials Beyond 5G – is a project funded as part of the European Smart Networks and Services (SNS) Joint Undertaking, an initiative jointly led by the European Commission and the 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) aimed at boosting 5G deployment and fostering Europe’s technology sovereignty in 6G. FIDAL is composed of 20 partners from across Europe, started in January 2023 and will last until December 2025.

FIDAL will leverage on new opportunities for innovations stemming from the low latency and high data capacity of beyond 5G and 6G networks. These networks will be more collaborative and inclusive than previous generations and FIDAL aims to provide an open-architecture platform to enable the testing of innovative technologies in the fields of Media and Public Protection & Disaster Relief (PPDR) through large experimentation sites and based on a multi-stakeholder approach. This will provide valuable feedback to the broader industry, academia, innovators, and community before the widespread commercial deployment of Evolved 5G networks throughout Europe. During its lifespan, The FIDAL project will establish 3 testbeds and 3 large-scale testing environments in Greece, Norway, and Spain in order to evaluate Evolved 5G technologies in real-world usage scenarios with the goal of facilitating adoption and laying the foundation for 6G technology.
